Listening To Locals During Burke Road Crossing Removal

06 July 2015

Local businesses, residents and community groups will be consulted during the removal of one of Melbourne’s 50 most dangerous and congested level crossings.

Member for Southern Metropolitan Region, Philip Dalidakis, will lead the community engagement program for the level crossing at Burke Rd in Glen Iris – the first to get underway under the Andrews Labor Government’s multi-billion dollar Level Crossing Removal Project.

The boom gates at Burke Road level crossing are down for 40 minutes between 7:00am-9:00am every morning, holding up motorists, cyclists and emergency services vehicles.

The Stakeholder Liaison Group for the Burke Road level crossing will include local businesses, residents, community groups and other stakeholders.

The Group will meet regularly with the project team and representatives from the Level Crossing Removal Authority to provide local community and business feedback as work to remove the Burke Road level crossing progresses.

Removing the level crossing will involve lowering the rail line under the road and rebuilding Gardiner Station to provide street level access to the lowered platforms.

Burke Road itself will also see three tram stops consolidated into one level access stop opposite the new station entrance.

Further information about works at Burke Road and Gardiner Station will be provided shortly as works to remove this congested death trap in the heart of Glen Iris ramp up.
