Labor Government Giving Aspiring Stars The Support They Need

21 January 2016

The Andrews Labor Government is helping emerging sports stars all over the State to fulfil their dreams by assisting with travel costs.

Today, Minister for Regional Development Jaala Pulford announced applications for the Labor Government’s Athlete Pathway Travel Grants Program are open.

Some of Victoria’s most accomplished sports stars learnt their skills in regional Victoria. Stars like Peter Siddle, Tony Lockett, Sharelle McMahon and Kristi Harrower have all made it to the top of their game, but it took many hours of travel for competitions and training camps to get there.

The Labor Government knows getting to and from state or national competitions can be a challenge for emerging athletes. That’s why the Government is giving emerging stars the support they need to play the sports they love.

State sporting associations are eligible to apply for grants of up to $6000 for teams or $2000 for individual athletes for travel costs associated with competing at national championships or selection trials.

Clubs can also apply for up to two grants of $750 to assist coaches or officials with the travel costs of training or competition.

Victoria is the sporting State, and the Labor Government wants it to stay that way. The Athlete Pathway Travel Grants Program is just one of the Government’s initiatives that keeps kids happy and healthy, communities active and local clubs strong.
