The Andrews Labor Government today announced a boost for more practical support for those experiencing family violence, to help them leave a violent relationship and create a safer, more stable future.

Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos said $12 million over four years will fund Flexible Support Packages to assist with expenses faced by those escaping family violence.

Packages of up to $7,000 will pay for things like rental or relocation costs, furnishings, clothing and books for children or security measures to improve safety at home.

They could also be used to pay for outstanding bills, cover medical costs or enable enrolment in education or training courses to develop new skills to help find employment.

The new packages are available immediately, delivered across the State in metropolitan, regional and rural areas by 15 family violence support service providers.

This funding is in addition to the Labor Government’s $81.3 million package to boost family violence services, including the establishment of Australia’s first Royal Commission into Family Violence.

Flexible Support Packages will provide much needed practical support ahead of the Commission’s recommendations being handed down next year.
