Koondrook Makes Its Mark With Riverfront Revitalisation

14 November 2016

Koondrook today celebrated the completion of a vital wharf redevelopment on the banks of the Murray River, securing 50 existing jobs and creating 27 new full time jobs for the region.

Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Victoria, Danielle Green, officially opened the Koondrook Wharf Redevelopment in a win for people along the Murray and tourists who continue to flock to the region.

It has capitalised on the area’s natural setting to drive visitation, attract private sector investment and boost the local economy.

The $2 million project has been supported with $500,000 from the Victorian Government under the Murray-Darling Basin Regional Economic Diversification Program with additional investment provided by Gannawarra Shire Council and the Federal Government.

It will complement the spectacular natural setting along the riverfront and was constructed using locally-sourced river red gum timber and includes:

  • Mooring facilities to support local recreational activities and commercial operations
  • Casual access to the Murray River foreshore to support a range of leisure and recreational activities
  • Interpretive signage featuring information on the original wharf
  • Deck access to frame key river views and support events and activities
  • Public infrastructure works to support local business and community activity.

With improved infrastructure and a better visitor experience, the upgraded riverfront has secured Koondrook’s place as a popular tourism destination, and will see an additional 4,000 day visitors and 2,800 night visitors every year.

The Andrews Labor Government has identified the visitor economy as a key driver for regional Victoria with the sector contributing $11.5 billion to the regional economy, generating around 114,000 jobs annually.
