Jobs Victoria: Kickstarting Careers In Melbourne’s West

17 March 2017

Jobseekers across Melbourne’s west are getting the support they need to find sustainable jobs thanks to a new initiative of the Andrews Labor Government’s Jobs Victoria program.

Westgate Community Initiative Group, Djerriwarrh Employment & Education Services and Wyndham Community & Education Centre have joined forces to create the west@work service.

Visiting LoveLuvo in Seddon today, Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan announced west@work was on track to hit its target of getting 200 young people into work – with 130 jobseekers participating in the scheme and 42 already placed in employment.

The Jobs Victoria Employment Network (JVEN) has already placed more than 100 workers across Melbourne’s west, with nine providers sharing in more than $6 million in funding.

The west@work service specialises in assisting refugees, people with a mental illness, the long-term unemployed and retrenched automotive workers.

Information hubs at the project partners’ established sites in Melton, Sunshine, Footscray and Werribee are helping people get the employment advice they need.

Jobs Victoria participants can engage in work experience placements that range from one-day ‘work tasters’ to full time four week placements. This allows them to build practical skills and obtain local referees to build their resumes.

The Labor Government’s Jobs Victoria program is the state’s largest-ever employment drive and will help more than 4,000 Victorians who face barriers to employment find work.
