It’s High Time To Turn Chandler Bridge Into An Urban Oasis

18 May 2016

Community gardens, parks, playgrounds and an open space inspired by New York’s famous High Line are among the ideas to transform the Chandler Highway Bridge into an urban oasis.

Design ideas are being sought on how to turn vacant areas next to the bridge into welcoming public spaces as the Andrews Labor Government moves ahead with two vital aspects of the Chandler Highway Upgrade.

First, the community is being asked to contribute their ideas on aspects of the design and future use of the bridge as well as other potential uses such as a park, playground, viewing platform or community garden.

The historic 124-year-old bridge will be converted to a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians as well as an open space for Melburnians.

A second open space will be established underneath the existing and future Chandler Highway Bridge.

In coming weeks, the community will be invited to submit feedback on refined designs for cycling and walking facilities that provide safer and more direct routes to nearby trails and paths.

The Government is also calling on experienced companies to express their interest to build the $110 million Chandler Highway Upgrade.

The upgrade will include widening the highway to six lanes and building a bridge over the Yarra River, upgrading the intersection at Heidelberg Rd and boosting safety by installing traffic lights at Yarra Boulevard.

The new bridge and roadworks will give travellers more ways to get active – either by cycling, walking or catching the bus. It will also provide a reliable journey for thousands of drivers every day when it is finished in mid-2018.

The Expressions of Interest open today, and will close on 15th June. Interested companies will be shortlisted prior to a formal tender process, which is expected to start in mid-2016.

Feedback from residents will be incorporated into the detailed design of the project and will be finalised as part of the tender process.
