International Education Heating Up In Latin America

13 October 2016

Victoria’s credentials as a world-leading destination for international education will be showcased to top government, business and academic representatives in Mexico and Chile.

Minister for International Education Steve Herbert will tomorrow leave on the seven day education mission to discuss Victoria’s capability to deliver its globally renowned education and training to the region.

The senior delegation is part of Victoria’s strategy to diversify our international education market.

The visit builds on a trip Mr Herbert took to Latin America last year which has already resulted in increased student numbers and education and research partnerships between Victoria and Latin America.

Latin America is one of the key emerging markets for Victorian international education, strengthening the state’s relationships across the region is vital for the future of the international education sector.

The region is one of Victoria’s fastest growing areas for international education with student enrolments doubling in the last five years.

The trip will include meetings with senior government representatives including the Mexican Secretariat of Public Education, the Chilean Vice Minister for Education and key education agents in Mexico and Chile.

Mr Herbert recently called on both the Turnbull Government and other states and territories for a national approach to international education – something they all supported.

Worth $5.8 billion to the state’s economy in 2015 and supporting more than 30,000 Victorian jobs, international education is Victoria’s number one service based export.
