Grants Available To Protect Victoria’s Coasts

24 February 2016

Community organisations are encouraged to apply for funding from the Coastcare Victoria Community Grants Program, which supports the conservation, restoration and rehabilitation of coastal and marine environments across the state.

Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Lisa Neville called on community groups in the Barwon South West, Port Phillip and Gippsland regions to apply for up to $7500 to undertake projects that help protect and enhance the coastal and near-shore marine environment.

Applications are now open and close on 17 April 2016.

Projects should focus on issues such as:

  • Biodiversity and habitat monitoring and preservation
  • Threatened species recovery
  • Revegetation
  • Long term monitoring of beach condition
  • Control of weeds and pest animals
  • Community engagement
  • Marine and coastal awareness and education

Previous Coastcare Victoria Community Grants projects have included woody weed removal and revegetation at Bells Beach and rehabilitation of a former sand mine on the Ramsar wetlands of Gippsland Lakes.

The grants program is part of the four-year, $9 million Coastal Environments Program, which is now in its third year.

Quotes attributable to the Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Lisa Neville

“Victoria’s clean and healthy coastlines are the backdrop to a huge number of social and recreational activities in our communities, and one of the main drawcards for millions of visitors to Victoria each year.”

“We are fortunate and thankful to have so many volunteers who give up their time to protect our coastal environments on behalf of their local communities. The Coastcare grants program is helping our not-for-profit groups continue these efforts for the enjoyment of all Victorians and visitors to our state.”
