Global Tech Company To Call Melbourne Home

20 May 2015

Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade, Adem Somyurek, today welcomed a decision by a leading US technology company, Square, to establish their Australian headquarters in Melbourne.

The announcement by California-based Square and the Andrews Labor Government is a major win for the local tech and business community, reaffirming Victoria as Australia's leader in technology.

Square, which was started by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, is a global payments technology company that has revolutionised commerce for small to medium enterprises (SMEs) with its innovative credit card payment reader and free point-of-sale app.

This enables SME’s to accept every sale, process every transaction and better understand their business.

Square’s move to Melbourne will provide Victorian SME's with opportunities to expand their business through the availability of their free point-of-sale app, Square Register, which has been in high demand by businesses since its release in November last year.

This unique app, compatible with iOS and Android tablets and smartphones, takes care of digital receipts, inventory and sales reports, recording cash, card or cheque transactions all in one place. This provides valuable analytics and feedback to businesses, giving them more time to focus on customers.

The company processes tens of billions in payments for small business merchants every year. Australia will be Square's fourth international location, following its establishment in the USA, Canada and Japan.
