Giving Victorians Confidence In Our Mining Regulator

15 March 2016

The Andrews Labor Government is giving Victorian communities and industry confidence in the state’s mining regulator – Earth Resources Regulation – with the release of a draft stakeholder engagement strategy for public comment.

The strategy is part of the Labor Government’s focus on safeguarding the health and wellbeing of local communities and ensuring that resource developments do not present environmental and health risks.

It comes in response to the reform of the mining regulator, announced by the Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio in September 2015, in order to improve regulatory practice, processes and operations, and restore community confidence in the regulator.

The draft stakeholder engagement strategy sets the direction of the regulator’s stakeholder engagement approach over the next three years, with a focus on building confidence and trust.

All Victorians, including community, industry, land and tenement holders, are considered stakeholders and are encouraged to have their say.

The strategy is available for public comment at: www.energyandresources.vic.gov.au/earth-resources-regulation/about-us/e…External Link .

As part of the reform process, a new compliance strategy is also being developed to give mining companies certainty over the rules governing their industry and encourage the development of projects in regional Victoria.

The compliance strategy will focus on early, proactive compliance and set out how the regulator will use compliance tools – including information and education, infringement notices, prosecution and revoking licences – for its licensing, approvals and enforcement activities.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Energy & Resources Lily D’Ambrosio

“Effective, modern, accountable and transparent regulation and visible compliance activity will help ensure the community and industry have confidence in their mining regulator.”
