200,000 motorists on the Monash Freeway will start to see yellow line markings go out this week between EastLink and Clyde Road in preparation for the first major work zone being established on the freeway.
Motorists should pay extra attention as traffic lanes start to be realigned in the evening off-peak and the speed limit reduced.
In the coming weeks, motorists will notice further changes to the road as a safe construction zone is created in the centre of the freeway where widening will occur.
Yellow lines will be used to mark temporary lanes and temporary barriers installed around the centre median to provide safety during construction.
The first stage of work has successfully been completed to make the shoulder of the road smoother and stronger so it can be used as a traffic lane, minimising disruption by ensuring the same number of lanes will be open during the peak periods.
The upgrade will see more than 30 kilometres of extra lanes while minimising the impact of construction on motorists.
It will address major bottlenecks by adding a lane in each direction between EastLink and Clyde Road in Berwick, along with smart technology and ramp upgrades, improve traffic flow and increase safety for motorists.
The project will create more than 400 jobs during construction, as part of the Labor Government’s transport infrastructure pipeline that is creating 15,000 jobs across Melbourne.
