Funding Boost For Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Volunteers

05 May 2017

Jan Juc’s Surf Life Saving Club is getting a brand new clubhouse, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino today announced that the surf club will benefit from a $2 million rebuild, enabling volunteers to continue protecting thousands of visitors each year.

The clubhouse is over 50 years old and ongoing maintenance is required. The surf club’s members have been working towards a new clubhouse since 2010 and this funding boost will help make it happen.

The club has around 1,000 members and this number is predicted to rise over the next decade. The time is right for a new clubhouse for volunteers who give up their time to undertake rescues, administer first aid and deliver community education programs.

There are also around 300 “nippers” at Jan Juc and the current clubhouse isn’t big enough to hold them and their parents for functions as well as training on surf safety, first aid and rescue techniques.

The new clubhouse will enable the life saving club to expand their training and education programs and provide more room for local community groups hosting functions and meetings.

In addition to community meeting spaces and a function room the clubhouse will also feature short-term accommodation for education and training camps as well as a cafe open to the public.

Quotes attributable to Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney

“We’ve answered the Life Saving Club’s calls for funding but they’ve also done a lot of fundraising to help make this new clubhouse happen. It’s a testament to the dedication of the club and the community it supports.”

“Lots of people have made promises, but it’s the Andrews Labor Government that has delivered.”
