Funding Boost For Cobram Harness Racing

27 July 2017

Cobram & District Harness Racing Club is building its reputation as a top regional racing venue with a new head-on camera tower and on-course stabling complex, thanks to almost $69,000 in funding.

Minister for Racing Martin Pakula today unveiled the new on-course stables, which feature three complexes of two stables and day yards accommodating six horses.

Construction of the new facility was completed last month and will allow the club to attract more trainers, establishing the Cobram Recreation Reserve as an ideal local training facility.

The Andrews Labor Government is contributing more than $19,000 towards the stables, and another $15,000 for a new head-on camera tower.

The camera tower is expected to be completed by the end of October, and will help stewards deliberating driver suspensions or protest hearings, making it easier to pick up movement in the highly competitive home straight.

Cobram is one of nine harness racing venues across the state to receive funding for camera towers as part of a project that will see head-on coverage available at 96 per cent of all Victorian harness racing venues.

Harness Racing Victoria has provided almost $25,000 towards the projects, with the club contributing almost $10,000 towards the on-course stabling.

Since 2014, the Government has provided almost $55,000 to support key infrastructure projects and race day attractions at Cobram Recreation Reserve, including the past two Cobram Pacing Cups.

The racing industry in the Goulburn region generates more than $227 million for the Victorian economy and helps sustain more than 2240 full-time equivalent jobs locally.
