The Andrews Labor Government has taken another step towards transforming Swan Street Bridge by selecting an architect for the makeover of the Melbourne icon.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan today announced BKK Architects has been awarded the contract for the architectural design of the bridge.
The Labor Government recently announced $30 million to upgrade the bridge, which will include adding an additional traffic lane and new separated shared paths for cyclists and pedestrians on both sides.
BMD, Cut & Fill and Seymour Whyte have been shortlisted to submit tenders for the upgrade with the contract due to be awarded by the end of 2016 and construction starting in mid 2017.
Linking the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Shrine of Remembrance with Rod Laver Arena, AAMI Park, Hisense Arena and the MCG, Swan Street Bridge is the gateway to Melbourne’s sport and entertainment precinct.
The successful design draws inspiration from landmarks including the Arts Centre and the rowers that make their way up and down the Yarra River each morning.
Earlier this year, the Labor Government asked the community to help shape the future of the bridge.
The feedback highlighted the important role the bridge continues to play in Melbourne’s sporting and cultural way of life and the need to address traffic congestion and improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians crossing the bridge.
Once completed, the upgrade will reduce traffic congestion, improve safety, and provide greater access to the sports and entertainment precinct.
