Deakin’s Innovation Secures New US Defence Contract

22 September 2015

The Andrews Labor Government has welcomed the signing of an innovative research agreement between Deakin University and leading US defence technology company, General Dynamics.

Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade Philip Dalidakis said the collaboration between the two organisations would advance and develop research in robotics for defence, healthcare and other world-class commercial applications.

The Victorian Government Business Office (VGBO) in Washington DC has supported Deakin University’s Centre for Intelligent Systems (CISR) in the US, helping them to facilitate networking opportunities and visits.

The VGBO recently accompanied senior Deakin University academics and administrators on a successful visit to the US to meet with a series of companies and to sign the research collaboration with General Dynamics in Fairfax, Virginia.

Deakin University’s CISR, home to more than 60 researchers, develops state-of-the-art algorithms and methodologies that provide solutions to real-world problems through research on next generation robotic control systems.

The Labor Government is investing in defence technologies as one of the six industries which have the potential for extraordinary growth. The Government has secured the $200 million Future Industries Fund, which will give grants of up to $1 million across these emerging industries.

The Government has also established the Premier’s Jobs and Investment Panel, an independent body of business and industry leaders supported by the $508 million Premier’s Jobs and Investment Fund. It will provide advice on driving economic growth and creating high-skill, high-wage jobs in Victoria.
