Conversation Turns To Disability Insurance Scheme

03 August 2016

Members of the Clayton community have come together to learn about how the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will help assist them have greater choice and control.

Minister for Housing Disability and Ageing Martin Foley today co-hosted a forum with Member for Oakleigh Steve Dimopoulos, providing local people with a disability and their families the chance to hear how they will transition to the NDIS.

The scheme started rolling out in the North East Melbourne area on 1 July 2016 and by mid-2019 an estimated 105,000 Victorians will be supported and receiving services through the NDIS. Inner Eastern Melbourne will join from 1 November 2017.

The NDIS is a national program providing a new way of delivering services and support for people with permanent and significant disability in Australia. It will give people with a disability more say over the services and supports they receive, to achieve their goals and participate in the community.

The NDIS can fund additional reasonable and necessary supports to help people pursue their goals and aspirations, and participate in daily life. Participants are funded directly and have greater control over the activities and supports they receive.

In Victoria, there are many well-established community organisations which will be important in helping people with a disability identify opportunities and prepare for the NDIS.

The Labor Government will continue to consult with all relevant parties to build high quality standards to underpin the scheme.
