Connecting Women To Family Violence Support

19 December 2016

The Andrews Labor Government is connecting more women and children experiencing family violence to vital support services.

Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos today announced a $185,000 funding boost for the state-wide Women’s Information and Referral Exchange to meet demand for family violence support.

WIRE has received an increasing number of queries relating to family violence as a result of the Royal Commission.

The funding will extend the operating hours of the Women’s Information Centre and Women’s Support Line.

WIRE will also be able to provide support for women through social media, online chat and email, as well as provide community outreach for women from marginalised communities.

This is in addition to the more than $730,000 WIRE receives annually from the Government to deliver a Women’s Support Service and Women’s Information Centre, which provide support to women on a number of issues including family violence.

WIRE is supported by more than 100 volunteers and has provided information, support and referrals to Victorian women for more than 30 years.

It provides a safe, friendly and supportive space at the Women’s Information Centre where women can talk to the volunteers, seek employment or check emails, and get free information on women’s issues.

The Labor Government is implementing all 227 recommendations of the Royal Commission into Family Violence.

As part of its 10-year plan to end family violence, the Government recently announced Ending Family Violence: Victoria’s Plan for Change. The Plan includes stronger intervention orders, specialist training for Victoria Police officers, and the establishment of a network of Support and Safety Hubs across Victoria.

The Women’s Information and Referral Exchange number is 1300 134 130.
