Nominations to open for new Geelong Mayor

Friday, 11 October 2013
Nominations will open for a new City of Greater Geelong Mayor on Thursday 17 October and Minister for Local Government Jeanette Powell is encouraging all interested candidates to get involved.

Mrs Powell has called on potential candidates to attend a candidate information session to be held at the Council Conference and Reception Centre in Geelong on Monday 14 October at 6pm to find out more about the electoral process and the important role of mayor.

“The people of Geelong spoke loud and clear about their desire to be able to directly elect their own mayor, and the need to have a person at the helm with the vision and leadership skills to take this great city forward into the future,” Mrs Powell said.

“The role of mayor, far from being only ceremonial, is an incredibly important and busy one that requires strong governance skills and a passion and commitment to represent the interests of the community.

“This is a great opportunity for interested candidates to put up their hands and nominate themselves to be the Mayor of the City of Greater Geelong.”

Candidate information kits containing nomination forms and other electoral information will be available at the information session.

The by-election will be held via postal ballot, which must be received by the Victorian Electoral Commission by 6.00pm, Friday 22 November.

If a serving Councillor were to nominate and be successful, a by-election would subsequently be needed in their Ward.
