Victoria's largest provider of cardiology services, Monash Health, will be the home to Australia's first dedicated cardiac hospital under a re-elected Napthine Government.
Premier Denis Napthine today announced a re-elected Coalition Government would deliver the new five-storey home for Monash Health's cardiac department, Monash Heart.
The Coalition Government will commit $70 million to the new Monash Heart Hospital, with Monash Health committing $50 million.
"Heart disease remains a major killer here in Victoria, with 20 Victorians dying every day from heart disease," Dr Napthine said.
"Demand for cardiac services is growing, but space constraints at the existing facilities at Monash Medical Centre mean that expansion is not an option," Dr Napthine said.
Minister for Health David Davis said that dedicated, standalone cardiac hospitals had been proven to be successful in many other major cities, but that one had not yet been built in Australia.
"Currently, Monash Heart's services at Clayton are spread through the hospital building. This is far from ideal and places constraints on clinical care," Mr Davis said.
"A purpose-built Monash Heart Hospital will deliver improved clinical care to patients, and a much better environment for both staff and patients.
"It will also significantly increase Monash Health's ability to attract and retain leading clinicians, and further develop Monash Heart Hospital as a leading centre for research," Mr Davis said.
Dr Napthine said that the new dedicated facility will provide Monash Heart with a significant boost in capacity, which it needs to meet the increased demand for cardiology services.
"Monash Heart do a fantastic job of treating Victorians, with over 73,000 tests, more than 5,200 catheterisation laboratory procedures and 15,500 echocardiograms currently performed here every year. The new dedicated facility will future proof Monash Heart and deliver much needed services to all Victorians," Dr Napthine said.
Development of the Monash Heart Hospital aligns with the Coalition's cardiac plan, Heart health: improved services and better outcomes for Victorians, which was launched at Monash Heart earlier this year.
Heart Health is a comprehensive five-year plan to prevent heart disease and further develop and improve cardiac services across the health system.
"Our plan builds on current efforts to strengthen cardiac services and outlines ways to improve our system to deliver more effective and efficient care into the future," Mr Davis said.
Dr Napthine said that the new Monash Heart facility would build on the Government's construction of the $250 million Monash Children's Hospital.
"The community can be proud of the place that Monash Health has in our healthcare system, and the Coalition's commitment to the Monash Heart Hospital means even better services for the almost one million Victorians living in Melbourne's south-east," Dr Napthine said.
