2008 Community Cabinet

Eastlink Corridor: 15 July 2008

The 84th Community Cabinet was held along the EastLink Corridor communities on Tuesday 15 July 2008.

Premier Brumby, Ministers Pallas & Jennings with school children Community Cabinet is a very important part of the Brumby Government’s listening to Victoria. Listening to the views of Victorians is very important in making sure that local communities play a real role and participate in the Government of Victoria.

That’s what Community Cabinet is all about.

During the visit, Minister Pike inspected progress on the Dandenong High School redevelopment, where the $10 million, first stage of capital works has started. The construction of the first of three Student Learning Centres and refurbishment of the library resource centre is currently under way at Dandenong High School and the project signals an exciting time ahead for education in the local area. The redevelopment is due to be completed next year, with a further $10 million allocated to Stage Two constructions.

On the day, Minister Kosky announced the introduction of a new loop bus route to the Doncaster area linking major shopping precincts and local attractions. Ms Kosky said the new loop bus would be introduced from late 2008 and would link in with other major bus services including the Eastern Freeway and express services to the CBD. The new Manningham City loop bus service is part of the Government’s commitment to improving transport services for people in Melbourne’s east.

Minister Madden at Community Cabinet The Premier, along with Minister Pallas and Minister Jennings, officially opened the new $26 million EastLink walking and cycling Trail during their visit. The new 35 kilometre EastLink Trail is Melbourne’s largest sealed pedestrian and bicycle path connecting Donvale and Dandenong South. It is part of the $2.5 billion EastLink project and provides a journey through preserved bushland of the Mullum Mullum Park. It’s a massive addition to our bicycle network and allows people to ride all the way from central Melbourne to Carrum on a series of connected paths.

The early opening of EastLink has signalled a new era of business growth in the area. Many businesses, particularly in the manufacturing, freight and logistics industries have targeted land around EastLink as a primary opportunity for growth. The early opening of EastLink has had a positive impact on doing business in the area, with vital productivity savings for businesses along the corridor. EastLink was opened on 29 June 2008.

The positive response from the people of the EastLink Corridor communities assures the Brumby Government that Community Cabinet visits remain a valuable, worthwhile exercise for the Government of Victoria.
