Campaign To Help Portland Attract And Retain Workers

13 January 2017

The Andrews Labor Government is backing a new program to strengthen Portland's ability to attract and retain a skilled workforce, with a $100,000 grant from its new Regional Skills Fund.

Minister for Regional Development, Jaala Pulford announced today the Labor Government’s investment in the Jobs 4 Portland - Workforce Attraction, Retention and Ambassador Pilot Program, which builds on the capability of Portland employers to attract and retain a diverse and skilled workforce.

In August 2016, Portland’s business, government and industry leaders identified a need to meet the skilled workforce requirements of Portland’s major employers, and the opportunity for a marketing campaign to promote Portland’s liveability.

The Jobs 4 Portland program will deliver services to help workers and their families integrate into the local community, join local networks and feel welcome. This will help local employers attract and retain the workers they need.

These services will be complemented with a marketing campaign to promote Portland’s lifestyle, community, and affordability, which will be delivered via a range of media and engagement opportunities, including:

  • Portland Jobs Expo and other job fairs
  • ‘Living in Glenelg’ branding website
  • ‘Welcome to Portland’ folders
  • ‘It’s a Better Life’ website and jobs portal.

The 12-month pilot program will run until December 2017, delivered by the Glenelg Shire Council with the support of the Committee for Portland and local employer, Porthaul.

The $34 million Regional Skills Fund supports targeted, place-based skills and workforce development across regional Victoria.
