Substantial improvements have been made to the metropolitan and regional rail networks and bus services have undergone their most significant upgrade in a generation.

Public transport patronage has grown at an unprecedented rate. Zone 3 has been abolished in outer Melbourne, while V/Line fares have been reduced by an average of 20 per cent, delivering big savings to travellers.

Roads

  • Since 1999, the Government has invested over $4.8 billion in building better roads across Victoria, including $2.1 billion on regional roads
  • Completed road projects include the Hallam Bypass, Geelong Road upgrade and Tullamarine-Calder interchange
  • Construction is underway on the Geelong Ring Road and upgrades to the Calder Highway continue
  • Construction of the Eastlink project is on track for completion in 2008
  • In the last five years, we have completed 37 significant road projects in outer metropolitan areas at a cost of nearly $1 billion
  • We have invested more than $500 million in specific road safety projects
  • The five lowest road tolls since records began were recorded over the past five years

Rail and trams

  • The Government has delivered more than $1 billion worth of new trams and trains
  • We have increased staffing on trains and at stations and introduced CCTV and duress alarms
  • The Regional Fast Rail Project was completed in August 2006 and more than 400 new regional rail services have been added
  • Level crossing upgrades are continuing, to increase safety for passengers and road users
  • The buyback of the privatised regional rail network means the Government is now investing in much-needed track maintenance
  • Tram line extensions have been completed to Vermont South, Box Hill and Docklands

Buses

  • Extended bus routes and hours of operation and increased frequency of services across Victoria
  • Continued investment in the SmartBus program, including extending orbital routes
