Victoria is one of the few jurisdictions in the world to have a Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability reporting on government performance in environmental management. We are also a world leader in the development of sustainable energy, with some of the biggest wind farms in Australia and one of the largest solar power plants in the world planned for northern Victoria.
Some key climate change achievements of the Government include:
- Australia’s first Industry Greenhouse Program (IGP) - which required the State’s largest greenhouse gas emitters to introduce carbon reduction plans – reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 1.23 million tonnes a year
- Building on the success of IGP the Brumby Government has introduced Energy and Resource Efficiency Plans for Victoria’s top and energy and water users. The plans will help business improve their energy and water efficiency
- Victoria’s 5-Star building standard, which is one of the strongest building regulations in the country for new homes, came into force in 2005. In 2007 the scheme was extended to require owners who undertake major alterations or additions to their homes to also meet the 5-Star standard
Protecting our environment and liveability
- We have created more National Parks than any other Victorian Government, including 13 Marine National Parks and 11 Marine Sanctuaries
- Through the Government’s network of Catchment Management Authorities extensive work was done to improve the protection of biodiversity and water quality of Victoria’s river systems
- Melbourne’s green wedge areas are now protected by legislation and growth areas are identified for housing development. Through Melbourne 2030, growth will be managed and Melbourne’s liveability protected
