Education

The Brumby Government is taking action now to meet the challenges of the future and make Victoria the best place to live, work and raise a family.

And we're taking action to ensure families have the best schools.

Education continues to be the Brumby Government’s number one priority. A quality education is the key to giving every Victorian child the best start in life.

While we have made significant achievements, we recognise that there is more to be done

The Brumby Government is making an unprecedented investment in our schools. We have committed to rebuild, renovate or extend every Victorian Government school by 2017, with $1.9 billion to rebuild renovate or extend 500 government schools over the next four years as part of the Victorian Schools Plan. This plan will deliver the largest school building program in Victoria’s history.

Government schools

  • Boosted investment in schools by $6.1 billion since 1999, in addition to substantial investment in training and skills in Victoria
  • Built or funded 70 new and replacement schools
  • Record low class sizes, with Prep to Year 2 average class sizes reduced to 20.7 in 2007 (down from 24.3 in 1999)
  • Provided funding to employ an extra 8,000 FTE teachers and support staff in schools since 1999

Non-government schools

  • Since 1999, State Government funding for non-government schools has increased by $151 million per annum or more than 60 per cent
