The Government’s additional support to Victoria Police is showing good results. Victoria’s crime rate has fallen by 23.5 per cent since 2000-01, with Victoria now having the lowest crime rate in Australia.
The Brumby Government is providing support and additional resources for our emergency services, including our valuable emergency service volunteers.
Resourcing Victoria Police to keep crime low
- Victoria’s crime rate is now the lowest in Australia
- Funded Victoria Police with a record budget of more than $1.6 billion in 2007-08
- Increased the number of police by over 1,400 since 1999
- Funded an additional 350 police this term, as well as 50 forensic and specialist investigators
- Funded the construction and refurbishment of over 140 police stations across the state
Tougher on the crimes that concern the community
- New laws to confiscate the cars of hoon drivers – over 3,800 seized to date
- Introduced random testing for drugged driving – all booze busses are now also drug busses
- Tough new laws to combat graffiti vandalism
- Doubled the penalties for the possession of controlled or prohibited weapons
- Maximum penalties have been increased for offences such as large commercial drug trafficking, possession of child pornography, and hit and run driving
Supporting our emergency services and volunteers
- The budgets for Victoria’s three major emergency services (MFB, CFA and SES) have doubled since 1999
- Invested over $400 million in new communications technology to allow our emergency services to effectively respond and communicate in an emergency
- More than 500 new fire-fighting appliances for CFA brigades
