Building The Education State In Williamstown

16 October 2015

The Andrews Labor Government is building and refurbishing schools in Williamstown and giving students the best chance in life.

Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Williamstown Wade Noonan today visited Williamstown High School and Bayside Secondary College to discuss works at the schools.

At Williamstown High School he viewed plans for the new performing arts centre, which the Labor Government provided $500,000 towards after the school raised $2 million itself.

He also visited Bayside P-12 College which received $300,000 to fund an upgrade of the technology wing and $1,101,630 in equity funding - an increase of $257,568 on last year.

These increases in equity funding are part of the Labor Government’s commitment to provide schools with an extra $747 million over the next four years.

Mr Merlino also visited Newport Lakes Primary School which received $22,258 in equity funding in the 2015-16 Victorian Budget, compared to zero last year. Williamstown High School received $125,426 in equity funding, also up from nothing last year.

The Budget invests almost $4 billion in Victoria’s education and skills system – representing the single biggest boost to education funding in Victoria’s history.

It provides $325 million to renovate, refurbish or rebuild 67 schools. The Budget will fund the first stage of an extensive asbestos removal program so that families can be assured their children are being educated in safe schools.

It also includes $180 million for programs that will help families cover the extra costs of education, like camps, excursions and uniforms, so no child misses out.
