Building The Education State In Bendigo

10 August 2016

The Andrews Labor Government is getting on with plans to rebuild Kalianna School and give its students the best chance in life.

Minister for Education James Merlino today joined Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards at Kalianna School to announce the release of the tender to appoint an architect to design and deliver the master plan.

The Labor Government secured $1 million for Kalianna School in the 2015-16 Victorian Budget to develop and complete its master plan.

Mr Merlino also received an update on a potential exciting new collaborative partnership between Kalianna School and La Trobe University. The partnership will inform practice for trainee teachers and health professionals when working with students who have learning needs.

The Labor Government is implementing its Special Needs Plan for Victorian Schools to create more inclusive, fair and safe schools for students with disabilities.

After his visit to Kalianna school, Mr Merlino dropped into two schools to the west of Bendigo - Maiden Gully Primary and Marong Primary - where he met with staff and students to discuss their priorities and vision for the future.

Bendigo Senior Secondary College and Epsom Primary School were next on the list, with Mr Merlino paying the two schools a visit to discuss their refurbishment plans.

Bendigo Senior Secondary College received $6 million in the Budget, which will be used to remove remaining relocatable classrooms and refurbish learning spaces, while Epsom Primary secured $5.7 million in the Budget to replace relocatable classrooms with new facilities.

Mr Merlino inspected Bendigo Senior Secondary College’s NETschool campus, which provides both online and face-to-face delivery of VCE, VCAL and VET units to students across Victoria from its central Bendigo location.
