Building Men’s Sheds In Areas Of High Need

04 October 2016

The Andrews Labor Government will build new Men’s Sheds and upgrade existing ones in communities across Victoria affected by fire, drought and flood.

Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos, announced the 32 successful grant recipients, which were chosen on the basis of high levels of need.

Men’s Sheds are one of Australia’s largest male based community development organisations and improve the health and wellbeing of participants by promoting social inclusion.

More than $1.26 million in funding has been allocated for grants up to $60,000 to construct new sheds and up to $30,000 towards the refurbishment of an existing shed.

25 of the projects are based in regional Victoria, and seven in metropolitan suburbs. Five of the communities have been affected by fire, seven have been hit by drought and two by floods.

Each project has been undertaken with extensive consultation, with a plan to grow local involvement from residents, address issues of social isolation and build strong partnerships with other organisations.
