Boosting Grassroots Sport In The Valley

10 March 2017

The Andrews Labor Government is getting on with opening more doors for people to get active and play a range of sports across the Latrobe Valley.

Touring the Valley today, Minister for Sport John Eren and Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing announced a funding boost for the Moe Bowling Club, while also officially opening the new Traralgon Tennis Show Court.

Grassroots clubs are the heart and soul of the Gippsland community, and they deserve safe modern facilities.

We promised them and we are now delivering $100,000 to build an all-weather synthetic grass bowling green for the Moe Bowling Club.

It will be more durable, easy to maintain and doesn’t require watering – so the club is doing its bit for the environment while keeping up with the demand for year-round bowls.

The Labor Government is delivering the new green through our Community Sports Infrastructure Fund, which is giving communities like the Latrobe Valley the facilities they need to grow and attract even more members.

In Traralgon, a $650,000 Government investment has also helped serve up the new $1.3 million Traralgon Tennis Club Show Court.

Featuring two brand new show courts with seating for 3,000 spectators, plexi-cushion surfaces, lighting and fencing, Traralgon is ready to ace more international tennis events.

“We know people in the Valley love their sport – that’s why we’re investing to make sure local clubs have the facilities they deserve.”

“We know the grass greens in Moe have been struggling recently, so this new weather proof green will give even more locals the opportunity to have a roll and get active.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing

“Moe Bowling Club members will have a true and reliable green they can be proud of and use all year round – rain, hail or shine.”

“The new show court will be able to lure even more big tennis tournaments to Traralgon in the future, bringing visitors to our region and keeping our local businesses busy.”
