Applications Open For New Nursing Excellence Scholarship Honouring Carol Friday

15 February 2016

The Andrews Labor Government today announced scholarship applications are open for the Carol Friday
Scholarship, honouring highly respected maternal and child health nurse Carol Friday who died in 2015.

Ms Friday was killed along with her son, Greig, aboard Germanwings flight 4U 9525 in March 2015.

Funded by the Labor Government, the Carol Friday Scholarship for MCH Nursing Excellence was set up in recognition of the important contributions Ms Friday made to her community throughout her career.

It will be awarded annually to a high-performing Victorian MCH nurse to undertake a Master's Degree in Nursing in Child, Family and Community Health at La Trobe University to help advance their practice.

Having gained her Maternal and Child Health qualification at La Trobe University, Ms Friday is remembered by her colleagues as a compassionate and devoted nurse who showed a deep commitment to supporting the community’s most vulnerable.

During her long career, Ms Friday also worked to improve conditions and practices for all Victorian maternal and child health nurses.

Qualified MCH nurses provide free support and advice regarding a child and their family’s health, wellbeing, learning and development.

Their role in engaging and supporting families during important stages early on in a child’s life is critical to a healthy start.

More than 457,000 children and their families across Victoria benefit from Victoria’s high-quality maternal and child health service.
