Animal Welfare Funding Boost Sets Tails Wagging

08 July 2017

The Andrews Labor Government is improving the lives of animals across Victoria – great and small.

Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford joined Ambassador for Animal Welfare and Member for Pascoe Vale Lizzie Blandthorn today to announce more than $350,000 for animal welfare groups to make life better for dogs, cats, horses and other much loved pets.

The Labor Government made the announcement with Beagle Rescue Victoria, which received more than $18,000 to buy and fit out a vehicle to transport rescued beagles to their new homes, adoption events or veterinary appointments.

Eight large grants of between $10,000 and $50,000, and seven small grants of under $10,000 have been awarded to organisations improving the welfare of much loved Victorian pets.

As well as Beagle Rescue Victoria, grant recipients include

  • A Bendigo service to expand its emergency pet accommodation facilities and run a cat desexing program
  • A cat rescue service to fit out an adoption centre in Preston
  • A Healesville domestic animal rescue group to open a new shelter, training and adoption facility
  • A Geelong animal rescue organisation to build a facility for retraining dogs with problem behaviours
  • A Pakenham organisation who will translate animal welfare material for the local community.

The Labor Government is improving the welfare of animals across Victoria through a range of measures, including funding to improve current shelters, facilities and programs, and by reforming of Victoria’s animal welfare laws, including ending cruel and barbaric puppy farming.

Quotes attributable to Member for Pascoe Vale and Animal Welfare Ambassador Lizzie Blandthorn

“As a foster carer for Beagle Rescue Victoria, I know that this funding will go a long way in making life better for rescued beagles. Beagle Rescue Victoria has a network of foster carers and adoptive families across the state, and this grant will help them with the 63,000km they travel every year caring for their rescued dogs.”
