A Brand New School For Portland Families

08 September 2017

Portland will receive a brand new specialist school and improved school facilities, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.

During his visit to inspect construction at Portland Primary School today, Treasurer Tim Pallas announced that $8 million will be invested in new school facilities.

$7 million is being invested in a new specialist Portland Bay School for children with disabilities, which will be co-located on the Portland Primary School’s current campus.

A further $1 million will go towards establishing classrooms to cater for Portland Primary School’s students.

Construction of the new school and the upgrade to Portland Primary School is already underway and is expected to be completed by mid-2018.

Portland Bay School offers a comprehensive curriculum for its 45 students, with a strong focus on literacy and numeracy, communication skills, social skills and technology programs. The school also runs a successful work experience program involving students and local businesses.

It also provides specialist help to students with additional needs, including supporting technology such as touch screen monitors, larger keyboards and a one-to-one iPad program to help non-verbal students communicate.

On top of the funding for these primary schools, the Labor Government has also invested $2.2 million to upgrade and modernise at Portland Secondary School, including $193,000 for maintenance improvements.

The new facilities for Portland families are part of the Government’s $2.5 billion state-wide investment, over the past three Budgets, to improve classrooms, upgrade facilities, build new schools and make Victoria the Education State.

This school building boom has delivered more than 1,000 school upgrades and 56 new school projects across the state, and supported almost 5000 construction jobs for Victorians.

The Government is building the Education State so that every student can access a great local school and get a great education.
