24 Hour Clearways On Punt Road Every Day Of The Week

27 August 2016

Twenty-four hour clearways along Punt Road will come into operation from Monday slashing congestion for the huge number of motorists who take the busy route.

The announcement comes as a welcome relief for residents and motorists frustrated with bottlenecks and choke points on weekends, when just one parked car can reduce the critical north-south corridor to one lane in each direction.

From today, 24 hour clearways will operate seven days a week from Alexandra Avenue, to Gladstone Street on the east side and from Alexandra Avenue to Union Street on the west side.

By making Punt Road a permanent non parking zone, travel reliability will be improved to the area, including to and from our premier events precinct and Melbourne’s CBD.

The loss of on-street parking will be compensated for, with three new car parks for those who live, work and visit the area to be opened by the end of December.

The new car parks will be located at 182 Punt Road, 198 Punt Road and 274 Punt Road.

The Andrews Labor Government will continue to consider medium and long term options to improve the operation of Punt Road.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan

“Over the next month bumper crowds will be heading to the MCG, and those travelling along Punt Road can expect a more reliable journey.”

“By introducing 24/7 clearways along Punt Road, we’ll see immediate benefits in how the traffic flows particularly on the weekends and outside of traditional peak periods.”
